Despite its ubiquitous nature now, the table undertook a lot of transformations to get where it is now. The Egyptians were the first to use the earliest tables, although the first were not much more than stone platforms that were used for eating rather than for sitting. Tables were also embraced by the Greeks and Romans, who seemed to use them more often than the Egyptians did. If you are reading this, chances are you’re sitting at or near a table. But if you’re like me, there’s also a good chance that your table is plain and boring. These tables, however, are anything but each is a great example of functional design or even art that puts my poor, boring little desk to shame.
